Support IOI

IOI assists local authorities and organizations in various social, developmental, and educational causes. Our outreach programs include supporting the formal education sector and after-school programming, sponsoring environmental education and research, as well as running personal well-being and nutrition programs in the public health sector.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, all our summer programs were shut down and we starting to work in close cooperation with the Ecuadorian government on crisis relief in Isabela. This included tripling the size of our urban gardening project, reducing dependency on food shipments from mainland Ecuador by 20% by boosting local agricultural production, and coordinating the government’s disaster relief efforts in Isabela, serving as a food bank for local residents.

Until now, IOI had been the only organization in the Galapagos working to increase food sovereignty from continental Ecuador while reducing the carbon footprint of products sent to the archipelago. Amid the crisis, the gravity of the islands' dependence on external provisions became abundantly clear, and the government is launching a program to strengthen local production.

IOI is working with ABG (Galapagos Biosecurity Agency) and local communities members to help increase the number of urban gardens.

In turn, our sustainable agriculture and urban gardening project is now the model for the statewide implementation of similar initiatives. IOI will be the coordinating agent of this government effort in Isabela County, reducing dependency on mainland shipments by 15%.

Additionally, IOI staff and members of our Isabela Sostenible group will lead an effort to triple the amount of urban gardens in Puerto Villamil to 75.  As part of this effort, IOI will additionally coordinate the government’s disaster relief efforts in Isabela, serving as a food bank for local residents. The program will distribute weekly market baskets of produce from the agricultural program to 60 families in economic distress.

With all 2020 budgets and programmatic planning toppled by the COVID-19 pandemic, IOI will use 100% of your donation to maintain our involvement with the economic and strategic disaster relief efforts in Galapagos. All donations will directly contribute to growing and distributing food for our community.
